Keith Wilson received a BA and MArch in Architecture from UC Berkeley and practiced Architecture for over 30 years. Concurrently, he maintained a steady production of watercolor paintings and drawings which paralleled and inspired architectural design efforts during this period. Discontinuing his architectural practice in 2001 he began painting abstract landscapes in sumi-ink/watercolor and studied natural systems, Chinese Painting, Buddhism and Daoist Thought.
Seven years ago Wilson began a concentrated focus working with oil paint and developed a stronger and more direct way of painting with the potential to increase the size and scale of his work. The paintings are constructed as they are being painted. “I feel I have entered into a vibrant period of painting which has advanced my connection to pure art having been informed by my previous years of creating watercolors and architecture mixed with periods of travel and research. I am drifting into a significant understanding of the meaning of the real through a steady, directed and measured mixing and application of paint.” - Keith Wilson The color block paintings currently being produced are narrative neutral consisting of simple color/shapes on linen that play out parallel relationships distilled from a critical view of the constructed environment and from the ethereal spaces experienced in dreams. A concurrent series begins as vine charcoal marks that are interfaced and defaced by turpentine or terpineol dissolved oil paint; creating a fluid interplay of line and form equally non-representational or not reference by identifiable form of object as the color block series. Over the last 35 years he has had many solo and group exhibits, participated in open studios and is represented in local collections. His work has regularly been selected for inclusion in Juried competitions in The San Francisco Area. With the strong presentation and direction of his current painting, he is currently seeking representation in a San Francisco Gallery. A CV is available on his website: www.KeithWilsonArt.com along with a fourty year comprehensive overview of his paintings and text. A resident of the Bay area since 1972, Keith Wilson currently lives and works in San Rafael and spends half of his time on the Sonoma coast where he is constructing another studio. He has traveled extensively and conducts extensive research that corresponds to his ongoing focus of artistic enquiry.
